Viru County Court handed a 35-year-old Lithuanian man a 700-euro fine for attempting to bribe an Estonian customs official with 500 rubles (10.5 euros).

The man wanted to avoid a customs check early on Tuesday in Narva and handed his passport with a 500-ruble note to the customs official.

According to the head of the Tax and Customs Board, Marek Helm, it is the second such case of attempted bribery to avoid customs checks. In February another Lithuanian truck driver tried to bribe an official, this time with 50 euros.

Besides a fine, both men also received a one-year suspended sentence. The 500 rubles was also confiscated.
